Teenagers charged with Manslaughter in Summit Death

Authorities this afternoon charged two teenagers with manslaughter following the death of a 47-year-old Summit man, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow and Summit Police Chief Robert C. Lucid.

The victim was on a bench in the promenade off of Springfield Avenue on July 17 around 9:30p when he was approached by a group of teenagers, said Romankow.

According to the investigation, the two teens facilitated the attack, said Romankow, causing serious injury. It appears to be a unprovoked attack although the case remains under investigation.

Police were called to the scene soon after the attack where they discovered Abelino Mazaniego of Summit suffering from severe head trauma. He was transported to Overlook Hospital and died on Tuesday afternoon, having never regained consciousness, said Romankow.

An investigation by the Summit Police Department and the Union County Homicide Taskforce indentified two suspects, teenagers from Summit.  18-year-old Khayri Williams-Clark and a 17-year-old were arrested this afternoon and are being held in Union County. Bail information is not yet available.  The identity of the 17-year-old is not available because of his age.

The attack was recorded by a teenager who was present during the assault, but who has not been charged, said Romankow. It is believed that the video has been circulated among teenagers in Summit. Anyone with information regarding the attack is urged to contact Homicide Task Force Detective Patrick Bradley at (908) 527-4152 or Summit Police Department Sgt. Michael Rabasca (908) 277-9389.

These criminal charges are mere accusations.
The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
