In 1978, the County of Union Department of Human Services and the Division on Aging were charged with setting up and carrying out a countywide transportation system dedicated to the elderly, disabled and economically disadvantaged citizens of the county. The Union County Paratransit System services the population who because of either physical or socioeconomic status are unable to make full use of the already existing transportation services.
The system is designed to address these problems and provide essential transportation services. Paratransit’s priorities are to encourage the senior and disabled population of Union County to remain in their homes, while allowing them to continue to participate in the life of their community.
These specific priorities are:
- Medical appointments at doctor’s offices, hospitals, mental health clinics and rehab centers
- Employment & education
- Public service agencies, i.e. Social Security and Welfare Offices
- Senior citizen centers
- Nutrition sites
- Shopping and recreation
- Bus & rail feeder service
The above are delivered within the capability of the system.
Referrals come from Social Service workers, the County Division on Aging, the county Office for the Disabled and local doctors and hospitals. Staff from the administrative office addresses groups and associations educating and informing the public of their existence and services of the system; as well as holding a public hearing once a year.
Service is provided by a centralized contracted agency Monday through Saturday 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. Transportation is given on a first come first served basis generally, we require five to seven days notice for an appointment. If an aide is needed it is up to the passenger to acquire one. We are a curb-to-curb service.
The above are delivered within the capability of the system, taking into consideration the following factors:
- Life sustaining service
- Maintenance of adequate health
- Lack of service would result in increased disability
