Man sentenced to 18 years in Prison
A Newark man was sentenced to 18 years in prison today after being found guilty of burglary, theft, eluding and three counts of aggravated assault, announced Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
Cornelius Utley DOB: 11/30/1976 was found guilty in June after a trial in Union County Superior Court, said Assistant Prosecutor Lucinda J. McLaughlin who prosecuted the case.
According to the investigation, in May 2008 Utley was driving in a stolen car through the streets of Elizabeth. He was spotted by officers who attempted to pull Utley over. The suspect ran a red light and crashed his vehicle into another, causing substantial injuries to the driver and two passengers, said McLaughlin. Utley was trapped inside the stolen vehicle but escaped serious injury. He was extracted from the car by members of the Elizabeth Fire Department and was subsequently arrested, said McLaughlin.
A jury convicted Utley following a four-day trial and 90 minutes of deliberation, said McLaughlin.
Utley was sentenced by Judge Miriam Span.
