Newark Man Found Guilty in 2009 Car Chase

Last week a Union County jury convicted a Newark man on 11 different charges stemming from 2009 car chase with police near the Kean University campus, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

Shawn Loyal DOB: 3/3/1984 was convicted of the charges, including two counts of 2nd Degree Aggravated Assault and one count of 2nd Degree eluding, stemming from the chase that began on November 18, 2009 in Union Township, said Assistant Prosecutor Brent Bramnick, who prosecuted the case.

According to the investigation Loyal, a verified member of the Bloods street gang, was in a stolen vehicle when members of the Union Township Police Department attempted to pull him over in the vicinity of Kean University, said Bramnick.

Loyal refused to pull over and led the officers on a chase through Union Township, Hillside and eventually into Elizabeth where he crashed into a taxi carrying two passengers and causing serious injury to them, said Bramnick. At that point, Loyal fled the stolen vehicle and led officers on a short foot chase and assaulted one of the officers while he was being placed under arrest, said Bramnick.

Loyal was found guilty of the charges following two days of deliberation and a four-day trial before Union County Superior Court Judge Robert J. Mega. Loyal faces up to 30 years in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on May 27, 2011.
