The Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is investigating the shooting death of a taxi driver earlier this morning in Plainfield, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

Around 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, the victim was discovered in the driver’s seat of his taxi on the 200 Block of Spooner Avenue, said Romankow. Isidro Leonardo, 44 of Plainfield was taken to a Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick in grave condition. He was pronounced dead about six hours later, said Romankow.

Mr. Leonardo was an employee of United Taxi Company in Plainfield.

Members of the Homicide Task Force and the Plainfield Police Department have spent the day collecting evidence and conducting interviews with residents in the area of the shooting. Detectives are perusing a number of investigatory avenues and additional information will be released when it becomes available.

At this point no suspects have been arrested and there is no indication of a motive for the homicide. Anyone with information relating to the death of Mr. Leonardo is asked to call Det. Kevin Grimmer at (908) 447-3777. Additionally people can call Union County Crime Stoppers at (908) 654-TIPS, which is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for the death of Mr. Leonardo. All calls are kept anonymous and confidential.

“As we do with every crime we will vigorously pursue the people responsible for this man’s death,” said Romankow. “Everyone deserves to live and work in peace and those who seek to disrupt this way of life will be captured and prosecuted.”
