Man pleads guilty to 2007 homicide

An Elizabeth man pled guilty in Superior Court today for his role in the December 2007 death of a neighbor, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

Darnell Westbrook, 43, pled guilty to aggravated manslaughter, said Assistant Prosecutor Ann Luvera, who prosecuted the case.

According to the investigation, Westbrook and the victim, Angel Benitez, had an argument inside an apartment building on Grove Street in Elizabeth where the two lived, said Luvera. In court today, Westbrook admitted that he hit the victim with a pipe and strangled the man. Westbrook did not reveal what the pair had argued about.

Westbrook faces 20 years in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on January 8, 2011.
