Fire Training Academy

Union County Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella (R) congratulates David Spranger (3rd L) of the Kenilworth Fire Department and Ken Gorman (2nd R) from the Fanwood Fire Department on earning the Ben Laganga Leadership Award upon graduating from the Union County Fire Training Academy. The honor is named for Union County’s long-time Director of Emergency Management who died in 2012 They are joined by Laganga family members Judi, Anthony (2nd L) and Michael.

In 1997, the Union County Division of Emergency Services formed a partnership with the Union County Fire Chiefs’ Association in an effort to further enrich the firefighters’ education. The advantage of this affiliation is the bringing together of combined resources to enhance training for both career and volunteer firefighters.

The Academy primarily operates at the Linden facility and has become a professional training ground. It also operates at other locations and provides Outreach programs to municipal fire departments to help meet their training needs. The staff consists of approximately 25 highly competent instructors.

The program at the Academy has a high standard for the Firefighters of Union County, which translates into pride and professionalism in serving the people of Union County.
