Professional Social Workers Honored at Runnells Specialized Hospital

The social workers at RUNNELLS Specialized Hospital of Union County were honored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders during “National Professional Social Workers Month in Union County”.

Social workers are highly trained professionals who help people to cope with some of life’s most difficult challenges including physical illness, loss, a disability and mental illness.  They help prevent crises and counsel individuals as well as families to deal more effectively with the stresses of daily living. Professional social workers are licensed by the State of New Jersey.

Union County employs numerous professional social workers at RUNNELLS Specialized Hospital. You will find social workers in the behavioral health units as well as long and short term skilled nursing care units including dementia/Alzheimers care; sub-acute rehabilitation and respite care. Their goals at RUNNELLS are to promote and enhance the quality of life for the facility’s residents and patients as well as their family members, thus carrying out the theme for this year’s Social Workers Month: ”Social Workers Change Futures.”

“I was pleased to present a resolution to the social workers honoring them during “National Professional Social Workers Month,” stated Freeholder Mohamed S. Jalloh. ”The resolution recognized RUNNELLS’ professional social workers and their many outstanding services. Social workers are an essential component of RUNNELLS care teams that strive to promote the highest level of physical, social and psychological functioning for those who come for care.”

Social workers perform a broad range of services which may include:

• orienting each person receiving care at RUNNELLS to available services and rights

• providing crisis management services

• assisting staff to understand the personal needs of clients

• coordinating discharge services, including referrals to necessary community services

• assisting residents and their families to cope with the adjustment of moving into an institutional setting
