‘Night Theater’ Is New Attraction at Trailside Nature & Science Center

Mountainside, NJ – Have you ever wondered which critters make all those sounds you hear outside at night? The newly renovated Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside has an exhibit to help identify those chirping, hooting and otherwise assorted noises.

The Night Theater, a seven-minute multi-dimensional presentation, takes you on a walk through the woods at night. Along the way, you will meet animals, birds and insects that find the evening hours to their liking. Produced by Monadnock Media, Inc. of Sunderland, Massachusetts, this unique activity is aimed at children of all ages. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, it is educational and proves there is no reason to be afraid of the dark!

“Union County couldn’t be prouder of the new Trailside,” said Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski as she described the new exhibits. “It’s the perfect place to bring your children or grandchildren for an afternoon of fun and learning.”

Along with the Night Theater, visitors can experience new “Please Touch” exhibits, which are part of the Center’s total renovation and remodeling completed in September, 2006. Each exhibit illustrates the natural wonders of the Watchung Reservation, the 2,000-acre preserve that is home to the Trailside Nature and Science Center. You will marvel at the 34-foot-tall beech tree that greets you upon arrival and look among its branches for hidden animals and birds. Listen to the bubbling waterfall at the base of the tree and get an up-close view of the live turtles, snakes and fish that swim in the newly-created ponds.

Trailside Nature and Science Center, located at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside, is a facility of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. It is dedicated to providing the highest quality environmental education in the Central New Jersey region.

Admission to the exhibits is free, every day between the hours of 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Workshops, classes and special events are on-going throughout the year.
