Fifty-three Union County organizations presenting arts programs will receive a total of $105,350 from the Fiscal Year 2007 Union County Arts Grant Program.
“That sum represents the majority of the Local Arts Program grant of $165,418 awarded to the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA),” said Freeholder Chairwoman, Bette Jane Kowalski. “The remainder and a cash match provided by the Board of Chosen Freeholders will enable the Office to present technical assistance workshops, the Teen Arts Program and the Senior Citizen Art Show, and pay staff to present programs and services for the benefit of Union County artists, cultural organizations and residents.”
For the tenth consecutive year, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts designated the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs as a Major Service Organization. According to David Miller, NJSCA Executive Director, designation as a “Major Service Organization” singles out the Office as one of the “anchor institutions that contribute vitally to the quality of life in New Jersey” and recognizes its “solid history of service excellence, substantial activity and broad public service.” The Office’s Local Arts Program application also received a “Certificate of Excellence.” This distinction commends the Office for exhibiting the highest standards of excellence in its artistry, operations, governance and public benefit. In addition to the Local Arts Program grant, the NJSCA also awarded the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs funding in two other categories. A Special Projects grant in the amount of $10,150 supports the “Arts and Well-Being” Initiative, a co-sponsorship with the Mental Health Association of Union County, which presents an annual conference. The Office also received $5,000 to manage the New Jersey State Senior Citizen Art Show and Contest, a co-sponsored project with the NJSCA.
Clara Fernandez, Chair of the Union County Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board, explained the Union County Arts Grant process. She noted that the applications from local organizations wishing to present arts activities are initially evaluated by professional panels and then are reviewed by an Arts Grant Committee in a highly competitive process before being acted upon by the entire Advisory Board. “We are very excited by the quality and variety of programs available to county residents through these programs,” Ms. Fernandez stated.
