COUNTY TO BEGIN TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
AT AREA INTERSECTIONS

Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski today announced plans to improve traffic intersections in Cranford, Westfield, Clark, Union and Elizabeth.

The design work, which will include the upgrading of traffic signal equipment, striping, and the installation of pedestrian friendly features, will cost a total of $350,458 and will be paid for from the County’s Capital Budget.

“Our goal is to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and improve conditions for pedestrian safety,” said Chairwoman Kowalski.

Contracts for engineering design services for the intersections were awarded to the Louis Berger Group of Florham Park, NJ, Pennoni Consulting Engineers in Cranford, NJ and Vollmer Engineering of Rochelle Park, NJ.

The intersections scheduled for improvement are as follows:

  • Central Avenue Corridor, Westfield and Clark. The County’s goal will be to improve mobility for pedestrians and vehicles through the corridor. Work will include traffic signal upgrades, new traffic signal equipment, video imaging vehicle detection, LED signals, count-down pedestrian signal indications, signs, and striping. In addition, ADA compliant concrete curb ramps with detectable warning devices will be installed. The total design cost, which is expected to be completed by January 2008, is $127,386.

  • Intersection Improvements in Cranford at the intersections of Springfield Avenue & Orange Avenue, and Springfield Avenue & North Union Avenue. Work will include: new traffic signal equipment, video imaging vehicle detection, LED signals, count-down pedestrian signal indications, signs, and striping. ADA compliant concrete curb ramps with detectable warning devices will be installed. The total design cost, which is expected to be completed by September 2007, is $56,000.

  • Intersection Improvements in Elizabeth at W. Jersey Street & Chilton Street, W. Grand Street & Chilton Street, Orchard & Chilton Streets, and Orchard & Cherry Streets. Work will include new traffic signal equipment, video imaging vehicle detection, new controller, LED signals, count-down pedestrian signal indications, signs, striping, ADA compliant concrete curb ramps with detectable warning devices, and upgraded inlet curb pieces. The total design cost, which is expected to be completed by November 2007, is $107,989.

  • Intersection Improvements in Union at Stuyvesant Avenue & Stanley Terrace and Stuyvesant Avenue/Chestnut Street & W. Chestnut Street. Work will include new traffic signal equipment, video imaging vehicle detection, new controller, LED signals, count-down pedestrian signal indications, signs, stripping, ADA compliant concrete curb ramps with detectable warning devices, and upgraded inlet curb pieces. The total design cost, which is expected to be completed by October 2007, is $59,083.

After the design phase is completed, bids for construction will be accepted. Construction could begin in the fall of 2007.
