Take a Hike and Learn Bird-Watching Basics, May 26

Mountainside, NJ – Take a hike along a wooded trail near the Deserted Village with a Trailside park naturalist to listen for the “sweet-sweet, I’m so sweet!” sounds of the yellow warbler and other spring migrant birds. “Bird Watching” is offered for adults, ages 18 and older, on May 26 from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Deserted Village. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. The fee is $10 per person for residents of Union County and $15 per person for out-of-county participants. Mountainside, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to offer a guided bird-watching hike for adults, ages18 and older, in the scenic 2,060-acre Watchung Reservation on Saturday morning, May 26, from 9:00-11:00 a.m.

“This program is an ideal way for the beginner bird enthusiast to learn how to identify birds by sight and sound,” said Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski, liaison to the Union County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

In the spring, the Deserted Village in the Watchung Reservation is one of the best bird watching locations in all of Union County. Join a Trailside park naturalist as you explore this unique area and witness the incredible variety of spring migrant birds. Look and listen for yellow warblers, scarlet tanagers, blue-gray gnatcatchers and many more! Be sure to bring your binoculars and a bird guide if you have them.

Pre-registration is required for this popular activity. The fee is $10 for residents of Union County and $15 for out-of-county participants. This walk will depart from the parking lot of the Deserted Village. Please call Trailside for directions.
