Union County Awards Design Contract
To Rehabilitate Lake Surprise Dam

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has awarded a professional engineering design service contract for the rehabilitation of Lake Surprise Dam in Summit and Mountainside.

The Freeholders awarded the design contract to T&M Associates of Middletown, New Jersey, for an amount not to exceed $187,812.

Lake Surprise is used for fishing and boating in the Watchung Reservation, the largest park in the public park system managed and maintained by the County of Union. The lake is part of the border between the City of Summit and the Borough of Mountainside.

“Lake Surprise is a unique part of the Union County Park System,” said Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski. “Our goal is to maintain the lake and the dam for the safety and recreational enjoyment of visitors to the Watchung Reservation.”

The first phase of the contract includes developing preliminary design concepts for the rehabilitation of any identified deficiencies of the Lake Surprise Dam. When the engineering study is developed, it will be submitted to the Union County Division of Engineering and the Union County Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for review. Then plans and permit applications will be submitted to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Dam Safety Section for review and approval.

The second phase of the contract will incorporate comments from the Dam Safety Section and Union County to finalize the design. This phase will include final computations and drawings, a construction cost estimate, and bid services.

The planning and design phases of the Lake Surprise Dam Rehabilitation project are expected to be completed by the summer of 2008.
