Shredding vehicle to make stops throughout County

Plainfield-Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud to announce additional dates for the mobile shredding unit. All events run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

“This service is a cost effective way to assist the county’s recycling efforts and help combat identity theft,” said Union County Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski. “This is a great opportunity for residents to securely eliminate clutter, while helping the environment.”

The events will be held:

  • June 19, Union Town Hall parking lot,
    1976 Morris Ave., Union.
  • July 25, Rahway Library parking lot,
2 City Hall Plaza/Main Street, Rahway.

Documents are put into 96-gallon containers provided by the company. The items are then dumped onto a conveyor belt and put through the shredder. The event will end prior to 2 p.m. if the shredding truck reaches capacity.

Participants are welcome to view the shredding process via a closed-circuit television. The shredded documents are then recycled, shipped to paper mills and used as pulp.

The Mobile Shredding program has been paid for through funds from the Department of Environmental Protection Solid Waste Services Tax Grant. Residents and businesses are welcome to participate. For more information, call the Recycling Hotline at (908) 654-9889 or go to
