ELIZABETH, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders announces the launch of a late night shuttle bus service from Elizabeth to Newark Liberty International Airport. The shuttle service will be provided at no cost to riders by Meadowlink, a Rutherford-based non-profit corporation that provides transportation services to commuters in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, Union and Monmouth counties.

Meadowlink worked with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), the County of Union and NJ Transit to secure funding for the demonstration project. Initial funding for the service comes from a federal program, the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, through the NJTPA.

Currently, there is no direct public transportation late at night from Elizabeth to the airport. The shuttle is intended to help low-income residents to access jobs at the airport and to get to and from work safely.

“Our goal is to remove the transportation barrier in the employment process,” said Union County Freeholder Vice Chairman Angel G. Estrada, a member of the Meadowlink Board of Trustees. “The shuttle service is especially needed during the late night and weekend shifts when public transportation is lacking.”

The Elizabeth-Newark Airport shuttle will run from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., seven days a week, providing direct access to all terminals at the airport beginning in October. The service will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost to the riders.

“Expanding our shuttle services to Elizabeth opens up a slew of opportunities for Union County job seekers,” said Meadowlink’s Chairman Perry E. Frenzel.

Seats on the airport shuttle are limited. To make reservations, please call Ellie Ferrer, 973-961-6941; or e-mail: ellie.ferrer@meadowlink.org.
