Mountainside, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to announce a new and exciting season of programming at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside. This winter, you can experience over 4,500 square feet of interactive exhibits or take part in one of the many educational environmental programs that Trailside has to offer.

Adults and children of all ages are invited to take part in “Outdoor Adventure” theme hikes and nature-related talks hosted each Saturday at the Trailside Visitor Center. Visitors are encouraged to drop by to meet live specimens from Trailside’s reptile collection, find out which tree has bark like an alligator’s skin and investigate the layers of the forest. Pre-registration is not required for most Outdoor Adventure programs. Topics and times vary from week to week.

Trailside’s preschool workshops, for 3-4 year-olds accompanied by an adult, and drop-off programs for children ages 4-6, will experiment with magnets, measure natural treasures, learn all about clouds and use imaginations to investigate the mythical and magical world of fairies.  Grade school children in the 1st – 2nd grade will learn all about dragons (real and imaginary), find out about animals such as penguins and polar bears inhabiting the Arctic regions of the world, and navigate around the Watchung Reservation using a map and compass. Third through fifth grade students will delight to see how real maple syrup is made from the sap of a sugar maple tree, examine skulls and furs of bear, fox and rabbit, and become sky watchers as they learn the stories behind legendary constellations like Orion the Hunter and Draco the Dragon.

Special programming entitled “February Festivities” will be held during the Presidents’ holiday weekend, Feb. 15 -19. Topics for the festivities include maple sugaring, mammals, winter survival, print mania and lots more. Highlighting the festivities on Monday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. is a matinee, “The Science of Magic.” Participants are invited to enjoy a super scientific circus featuring magnetism, light, air, condensation and optical illusion. For a complete list of February Festivities topics, times and fees, please call Trailside or visit our website.

Summer camp registration for residents of Union County will be held Saturday, March 1st from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. A lottery system will be used for the 2008 camp registration. Union County residents are invited to stop by Trailside’s Visitor Center between Feb. 9-22 from noon – 5 p.m. daily, or until the lottery ticket numbers run out.
