Fifty-four Union County organizations presenting arts programs will receive a total of $110,685 from the Fiscal Year 2008 Union County Arts Grant Program.
“That sum represents the major portion of the Local Arts Program grant of $185,268 awarded to the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA),” said Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada. “The remainder and a cash match provided by the Board of Chosen Freeholders will enable the Office to present the Teen Arts Program, the Senior Citizen Art Show, technical assistance workshops, and pay staff to present programs and services for the benefit of Union County artists, cultural organizations and residents.”
For the eleventh consecutive year, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts designated the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs as a Major Service Organization. According to Steve Runk, NJSCA Executive Director, designation as a “Major Service Organization” singles out the Office as one of the “anchor institutions that contribute vitally to the quality of life in New Jersey,” and recognizes its “solid history of service excellence, substantial activity and broad
public service.” The Office also received a “Certificate of Excellence.” This distinction commends the Office for exhibiting the highest standards of excellence in its artistry, operations, governance and public benefit.
Clara Fernandez, Chair of the Union County Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board, explained the Union County Arts Grant process. She noted that the applications from local organizations wishing to present arts activities are initially evaluated by professional panels and then are reviewed by an Arts Grant Committee in a highly competitive process before being acted upon by the entire Advisory Board.
“We are very excited by the quality and variety of programs available to county residents through these programs,” Ms. Fernandez said.
