Union County Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada (L), Union County Police Chief Dan Vaniska (2nd L) and Union County Emergency Management Director Ben Laganga (R) show Linden Police Deputy Chief Sal Bivona (C) and Fanwood Police Chief Donald Domanoski a breaching kit which allows police officers quicker access into a locked building during an emergency situation. The County purchased 181 breaching kits through a Homeland Security grant and has distributed the kits to police departments throughout the county. The project, jointly managed by the Office of Emergency Management, the Union County Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, was in reaction to last year’s shooting at Virginia Tech where many doors were chained or otherwise barricaded and first-due police officers could not quickly breach the entrance points. The breaching kits are for regular police patrol units who typically would be the first to arrive on the scene of an emergency. |
