Hike the Sierra Trail at Trailside, May 17

In the Watchung Reservation on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, adults ages 18 and older are invited to take a hike along a portion of the Sierra Trail as a Trailside park naturalist identifies the sights and sounds of spring along the way. Pre-registration is recommended as space is limited. The fee is $10 per person for Union County residents and $15 per person for out-of-county hikers. MOUNTAINSIDE, NJThe Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to offer a guided educational hike along a section of the Sierra Trail in the Watchung Reservation from the Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

“May is a beautiful time to explore the Reservation and enjoy the sights and sounds of spring and the great outdoors,” said Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada.

The Watchung Reservation is the largest protected area of land in Union County. Its scenic 2,060 acres offer a variety of habitats for plants and animals. Join a Trailside park naturalist on a hike along a portion of the Sierra Trail to learn about the diversity of flora and fauna living in the reservation. Explore mixed hardwood forests surrounding Trailside and Watchung Stable as well as wetland areas at the headwaters of Lake Surprise.

Please dress for the weather and bring water, a snack and an interest in and love for the outdoors. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended. The hiking pace will be moderate. The fee is $10 per person for Union County residents and $15 per person for out-of-county hikers.  Pre-registration is recommended as space is limited.
