Enjoy a Guided Horseback Ride through the Watchung Reservation

guided horseback ride through the watchung reservation

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – Spring is here and Union County’s Watchung Stable offers guided trail rides on Sundays for everyone nine years of age or older, weather permitting.

“The Watchung Reservation is a 2,000-acre park that offers everyone a chance to experience the natural beauty of a forest, right in Mountainside,” said Freeholder Rick Proctor, liaison to the Union County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. “Horseback riding in the Watchung Reservation is a real treat – you see so much of the park and also get some exercise!”

Guided trail rides are held on Sundays at 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., weather permitting. Visitors are accommodated on a first come, first served basis. Experience is not required.

Watchung Stable also features private guided rides on Sunday mornings for groups of ten or more people. These rides need to be set up in advance and require full payment for all riders before the set date. The cost of the private group ride is the rental fee for each rider (Union County residents: $23.00; out-of-county participants: $29.00) plus an additional single payment of $25.00 for the required guide.

For those younger riders under nine years of age, Watchung Stable offers “lead lines” on Sundays from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. This fun activity is held on a first come, first serve basis, and it is also available during the week if the weather permits. The cost for a lead line is $13.00 for Union County residents and $19.00 for out-of-county participants. Lead line rentals are for 30 minutes and require an accompanying adult to “lead” the horse.

The trail rides and lead lines are held at Watchung Stable, which is located at 1160 Summit Lane in Mountainside. Office hours are 9:00 a.m.-noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. daily.
