Union County Freeholders approve $640,000 in funds to help homeowners
repair their properties

ELIZABETH---The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders have approved $640,000 for a program to help Union County homeowners do necessary repairs to their homes.

The home repair program, which is available through the newly-named Union County Home Improvement Program (formerly known as the Multi-Jurisdictional program) is available to low and moderate income homeowners from the following towns: Berkeley Heights, Clark, Cranford, Fanwood, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Mountainside, New Providence, Roselle, Roselle Park, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Summit and Westfield.

“There are many residents who in this economy may be struggling to make much-needed repairs,” said Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada. “This is a program that will address these issues and provide our residents with needed relief.”

Homeowners may be eligible for up to $25,000 in funds for home improvements that include the repair or replacement of substandard heating, plumbing, and electrical systems, structural repairs, repairs to correct code violations, lead based paint stabilization and remediation and energy saving measures such as windows and doors. Eligibility is based on the low and moderate income limits published by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The financing available is a deferred payment no-interest loan. Payment is deferred until the sale or transfer of the property.

Program staff will meet with potential applicants and will explain the program guidelines and benefits, complete the program application and schedule the property inspection. Staff will prepare a detailed work-write-up, review contractor estimates, perform in-progress inspection and a final inspection at the completion of work.

The Union County Home Improvement Program is administered by Development Directions L.L.C. They can be contacted at (732) 382-8100 for an application.
