Union County Offers Golf Camps for Boys and Girls

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to announce that golf camps are available at the County’s three public golf courses for children between 10 and 17 years of age through the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal. Young golfers are encouraged to register now for instructional camps that begin in early July.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to learn to play golf with an instructor who is a P.G.A. professional,” said Freeholder Rick Proctor, liaison to the Union County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. “Campers will learn the techniques of the game and the basic golf rules and etiquette.”

Two 8-day sessions of Junior Golf Camp will be offered for boys and girls ages 12 through 17 who live in Union County. Prior golfing experience is not required for these instructional programs. Session 1 (July 8-18) and Session 2 (July 29-August 8) will be available Tuesday through Friday, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Ash Brook, Galloping Hill and Oak Ridge golf courses. Due to popular demand, campers may only enroll in one session per summer.

Campers need to apply in person and registration forms may be turned in at any of the three Union County courses. The session fee of $150 (for eight classes) is due at the time of registration. Junior Golf Camp classes are limited to 16 students per class to ensure a pleasurable experience for all enrolled. Sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students should bring a full set of golf clubs with them to camp. A limited number of clubs are available to borrow from the pro shop for students who don’t have their own.

A new program for 10 and 11 year-old boys and girls is called the Certification Golf Camp. These classes take place on the four Saturdays or four Sundays in July at either the Ash Brook Golf Course or the Galloping Hill Golf Course. The fee of $100 (for four classes) is due at the time of registration. Successful certification provides the opportunity for students to purchase a youth identification card and play at Union County’s public golf courses on weekday afternoons when accompanied by an adult.

Campers should apply in person at any of these golf courses: Ash Brook Golf Course,
Raritan Road, Scotch Plains, 908-756-0414; Galloping Hill Golf Course, Boulevard,
Kenilworth, 908-686-1556; or Oak Ridge Golf Course, Oak Ridge Road, Clark, 732-574-0139.

Union County’s three public golf courses are a service of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. For more information about the golf courses, visit the Union County web site at www.ucnj.org/parks/golf.html.
