Construction under way on Union County Improvement Authority project

new library rises in linden

Elizabeth, NJ – The Union County Improvement Authority broke ground today on a significant new addition to Union County’s information infrastructure, the new Linden Library on East Henry Street.  The $7.6 million project was financed through the Improvement Authority.

“This is a wonderful example of the great good that happens when people work together as a community, and I am very proud that the Improvement Authority had the opportunity to help make it happen,” said Charlotte DeFilippo, Executive Director of the Union County Improvement Authority.

“On behalf of the Freeholder Board, I would like to thank the citizens of Linden and their elected officials for working with the Improvement Authority to make this dream a reality,” said Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada.  “This new library will provide the City of Linden with a lifetime of enrichment.”

The new 25,000 sq ft building will be constructed behind the existing library on Henry Street.  To enable residents to continue using library services with the least possible disruption, the existing building will remain in use until construction nears completion.  In addition, the children’s room has been moved to the John T. Gregorio Recreation Center at 330 Helen Street.

The new building presents an open, welcoming façade to the public, with landscaping that includes flowering plants and the city’s namesake linden trees.   The library will be equipped with wireless capability for Internet access, as well as a computer lab with more computers and space for computer classes.  There will also be three large conference rooms, including a circular room with a balcony.

Accommodations for younger patrons include a colorful children’s area with an outdoor patio for reading and story time in the fresh air.  A separate area is designed with comfortable seating, to appeal to young adults.
