Mountainside, NJ
– Families enjoyed using dip and seine nets to sample the aquatic life found in Seeley’s Pond during one of Trailside’s many summer offerings last year. Participants in a Pond Life program worked with Trailside Naturalist Karen Inzillo (left) to identify a pickerel fish caught using a seine net. Frogs, dragonfly larvae, and snails were some of the other highlights participants caught, identified and released. Due to the popularity of Trailside’s summer camp and family programs, a lottery system will be conducted for residents of Union County from February 7 - 20 from noon to 5 p.m. daily, or until all numbers have been chosen. The number drawn will indicate the registrant’s placement on line and arrival time for camp registration on Saturday, March 7.
Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license will be required. Please call Trailside at 908-789-3670 or visit us on the web at www.ucnj.org/trailside for complete details about Trailside’s summer camp and family programs. Trailside is located at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside and is a service of the Union County
Board of Chosen Freeholders.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Parks and Community Renewal proudly announce a new and exciting season of summer programming at Trailside Nature and Science Center. A variety of camps and family programs will be offered throughout the summer months.

“Trailside summer programs offer the perfect opportunity for adults and children of all ages to explore the out-of-doors while learning all about nature,” said Freeholder Chairman Al Mirabella. “These programs are very popular and we are doing what we can to make them available to as many people as possible.”

Due to the enormous popularity of Trailside’s programming, a lottery system will be used to determine placement in line for summer program registration. Union County residents may visit Trailside to draw a lottery number beginning on Saturday, Feb. 7, through Friday, Feb. 20, from noon – 5:00 p.m. daily. The number drawn will indicate the registrant’s position on line and time of arrival for registration day on March 7th.

Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, will be required to draw a number and only one number may be drawn per family/address. Registrants must pick their own lottery ticket for their family. The registrant’s name, address, lottery number and arrival time will be recorded when the lottery number is chosen. A total of 520 numbers are included in the lottery system. The lottery will be conducted Feb. 7 – 20, or until all the numbers have been drawn.

Summer registration will take place on Saturday, March 7, beginning at 8:00 a.m. for residents of Union County who have drawn a lottery ticket. Registrants must bring their lottery ticket with them to registration and must be present when their number is called or their position in line will be forfeited. A person may register only their children/family with their lottery ticket. If a registrant arrives after their number is called, but within their designated registration hour indicated on the lottery ticket, they may register at the end of the one-hour time block. If the registrant misses their one-hour block altogether, they may return at 4:30 p.m. to register. No exceptions will be made.

Due to the increased popularity of the Trailside Summer Camp programs and in order to accommodate as many registrants as possible, summer camp sessions will be limited for the 2009 season. Children in the pre-first grade camp programs will be limited to two weeks of camp, will not be permitted to repeat a camp in the 2009 season, and will not be permitted to enroll in a morning and afternoon camp session during the same camp week. Children entering the 1st - 9th grade camps will be limited to two weeks of full-day combination camps or four weeks of half-day camps and will not be permitted to repeat the same camp session during the 2009 season. Families will be limited to a maximum of three Friday Family programs and three evening programs which include Tuesday Evening programs, Family Campfires and Beginner Family Campouts.

Registration for out-of-county participants begins on Monday, March 9, from noon – 5 p.m. Lottery tickets will not be required. Registration will continue until all programs are filled.
