Union County Receives State Funding to Provide Grants for Local Arts Groups

For the twelfth consecutive year, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) has designated the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs as a “Major Service Organization.” As a result, 51 Union County organizations that present arts programs in the county will receive a total of $90,295 from the Union County FY2009 Local Arts Grant Program.

According to Steve Runk, NJSCA Executive Director, designation as a “Major Service Organization” singles out the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs as one of the “anchor institutions that contribute vitally to the quality of life in New Jersey,” and recognizes its “solid history of service excellence, substantial activity and broad public service.” The Office also received a “Certificate of Excellence” from the NJSCA which commends it for exhibiting the highest standards of excellence in its artistry, operations, governance and public benefit.

“The arts funding represents the major portion of the Local Arts Program grant of $144,728 awarded to the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs by the NJSCA,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “The remainder and a cash match provided by the Board of Chosen Freeholders will enable the Office to present programs and services this year. The services include the Teen Arts Program, the Senior Citizen Art Show, technical assistance workshops, and staff salaries to support programs and services for the benefit of Union County artists, cultural organizations and residents.”

“We are glad to offer a wide variety of wonderful activities to county residents through these programs,” said Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski, liaison to the Union County Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board. “The applications from local groups wishing to present arts activities are evaluated by professional panels and then reviewed by an Arts Grant Committee in a highly competitive process before being acted upon by the entire Advisory Board.”

To inquire about the Union County Fiscal Year 2010 Local Arts Grant program or to learn about other programs, services and volunteer opportunities through the Office, please contact the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, 633 Pearl Street, Elizabeth, NJ 07202; telephone 908-558-2550; email: culturalinfo@ucnj.org.  NJ Relay users dial 711.
