MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and Trailside Nature and Science Center are pleased to announce the 2009 Wildlife Photography Contest. Amateur photographers, ages six years old through adult, are invited to enter their original photographs of wild animals in their natural habitat.

“Wild animals are challenging photographic subjects, and capturing them successfully with a camera requires knowledge of the animal, its habits and habitats,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “The hobby of wildlife photography is a great way to gain a better understanding of the natural world and we encourage amateur photographers to share their best wildlife photos with the community at Trailside.”

Contest entries should be un-matted, unframed 5” x 7” black and white or color prints. Participants may enter a maximum of two photographs. Prizes will be given in each of three age groups: 6-11, 12-17, and 18 and older. The deadline for entries is Friday, April 10.

Winners will be announced at 4:45 p.m. at the 19th annual Wildlife Sunday event held on April 19 at Trailside from noon – 5:00 p.m. All photographs will be displayed at the Trailside Visitor Center through May 11.

Photographs will be judged by local area professional photographers. The judging will be based on originality, composition, technical excellence and artistic merit. One prize will be awarded to the best photograph in each age group.

The winners of the 2008 Wildlife Sunday Photography contest included Michael Augustyniak of Bayonne in the 18 and older category for his photo of a Red-tailed Hawk; David Shi of New Providence in the 12-17 year old category for his photo of a bird nest with nestlings; and Amanda Ferrigno of Union in the 6-11 year old category for her photo of pelicans.
