Former County golf course converted to community use

Elizabeth, NJ – Free, family-friendly outdoor movies and music are on the schedule for Oak Ridge Park this summer, offered by the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal.  The events are part of Union County’s popular Summer Arts Festival and Family Flix series.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to get acquainted with Oak Ridge as an open public park for all to enjoy, and it enables us to extend some of our most popular community services to more residents,” said Union County Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

This year, golf activities were consolidated at the County’s two other public golf courses, Ash Brook and Galloping Hill, due to declining usage at Oak Ridge.

The Union County Summer Arts Festival of free outdoor concerts has been a popular fixture on the region’s cultural scene since 1961.  It has been held in various Union County parks, most recently at Echo Lake.

This summer, the Summer Arts Festival will alternate locations weekly, starting with July 1 at Echo Lake and July 8 at Oak Ridge.  The other Oak Ridge dates are July 22, August 5, and August19.  All concerts will start at 7:30 p.m.

Family Flix, the county’s free outdoor summer movie series, will also alternate between Oak Ridge and other county parks.  The Oak Ridge dates are August 11 and 18, and the films will start at 8:45 p.m.

Attendees at all of the events are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs.  Food vendors are also available for drinks and snacks.

Oak Ridge Park is located at the southern border of Union County between Clark and Scotch Plains, adjacent to the county’s Ash Brook Reservation and Ash Brook Golf Course.

More details on the scheduled events will be available soon by calling the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal at 908-527-4900.
