Garden Club for Union County Children

Rahway, NJ -- Children can discover the wonder of a garden by joining the new 4-H YMCA “Square Foot” Gardening Club.  The club will meet on Saturday mornings in July and August
from 10:30 to noon at the Rahway YMCA at 1564 Irving Street.  The first meeting will be held
on July 11.

Membership is open to all Union County children who are entering grades 3, 4, or 5 this fall.
A one-time fee of $20 covers the entire cost of the summer program.

Club activities include planning a garden, learning how to garden, and harvesting produce, along with light cooking, crafts, and community service projects.

“Square Foot” is a child-friendly gardening method.  Compared to ordinary vegetable gardens, a Square Foot garden is easier to maintain and requires little or no pesticides or herbicides.

The club will be lead by Rosa Tamayo, a volunteer trained and certified by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program of Union County and The YMCA of Eastern Union County.  A trained expert in Square Foot gardening will also provide assistance.

For more information about the program or to register, contact Union County 4-H Agent James Nichnadowicz at 908-654-9854 ext. 2236 or email him at nichnadowicz@njaes.rutgers.edu.

Rutgers Cooperative 4-H is supported in part by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
