MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey Mineralogical Society invite you to explore the wonderful world of rocks, minerals, fossils and gems at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside on Saturday, October 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
“This is an excellent opportunity for visitors to discover the fascinating world of geology,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “Visitors may watch gemstones being cut and polished or enjoy an interpretive hike highlighting the geologic history of the Watchung Reservation. There is something for everyone at this event!”
Admission to the Rock, Mineral and Gem Show is free. Geologists young and old will delight at the variety of exhibits of gemstones, minerals and jewelry during this special event. More than 30 vendors will be selling minerals, rocks, gems, jewelry and fossils from around the world. Throughout the afternoon, a specialist will help you identify minerals from your own collection. Hands-on activities for children and free face-painting will be available.
Adults and children, ages nine and older, are invited to hike a rocky trail with a geologist on an interpretive geology hike at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. See the basalt core of the Watchungs and deposits of sandstone, shale and glacial debris that illustrate the geologic history of the Reservation. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Registration will take place beginning at 9:00 a.m. on event day at the Visitor Service Desk. There is no fee for the walk, which is slightly strenuous. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
The featured presentation is “Dr. Magic and the Magic of Geology.” Dr. Okulewicz is both a professor of geology and a professional magician. He will combine both specialties in an educational, entertaining and interactive presentation to illustrate concepts of how the Earth works. The show begins at 3:30 p.m. and is recommended for ages four and older. Admission to the magic show is $4.00 per person. Tickets will go on sale beginning at 12 noon at the Visitor Service Desk. No strollers in the auditorium, please.
