Union County Sheriff’s Officers Rescue, Arrest Suspect Hanging from 5th Floor Window

ELIZABETH—Union County Sheriff Officers seeking a fugitive this morning found him dangling from a fifth floor window in an attempt to avoid capture. After pulling the suspect inside to safety, the officers promptly arrested him.

Jerry Herbert of Elizabeth was wanted on a sentencing warrant issued by Superior Court Judge Scott Moynihan after failing to appear in court last week.  Herbert, 36, was facing five years in prison as a result of a plea deal on various drug charges.

Sheriff’s Sgts. Carlo Caparruva and Daryl Warner entered the fifth floor apartment on Irvington Avenue to arrest Herbert and  found him hanging from a rear bedroom window.

When Sgt. Caparruva asked Herbert what he was thinking when he went out the window Herbert replied, “I would just drop and roll.”

Sheriff’s Officers Anthony Gialannella, Keith Medvedich and Charles Schmitt completed the team executing the warrant.

Herbert was transported to the Union County Jail without further incident to await sentencing.
