This prestigious distinction underlines the deep appreciation and gratitude of the French people who were liberated during World War II. Tomko served onboard the USS Barnett, an amphibious transport ship, which took part in the invasions of Sicily, Italy, Marseilles in the south of France and the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He also saw action in the Pacific Theater at Okinawa. They are joined by Tomko’s wife, Maria, and Richard Thompson of the Union County Office of Veterans Affairs.

  • “The Raptor Trust Story,” a program for adults, 18 and older, will be held at Trailside Nature & Science Center in Mountainside on Thursday, March 22 from 7:15 – 8:15 p.m. The fee is $8 per person for Union County residents and $10 for out-of-county adults. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins will be accommodated as space permits. Lauren Butcher, the Raptor Trust’s Education Director, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at what the Trust does to care for the thousands of injured and orphaned birds that are brought to the facility each year and she will introduce one of the Trust’s “avian ambassador’s.

  • Freeholders Vernell Wright (L) and Mohamed Jalloh speak with Sage Eldercare Executive Director Jessica Rosenzweig during a visit to the not-for-profit organization in Summit where they volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels to senior citizens in the area. The Freeholders’ visit also included a tour of Sage’s facilities on Broad Street that provides several senior services.
  • Archery safety lessons are available for beginners ages nine years and older at the Union County Archery Range at Oak Ridge Park in Clark. Each archery course is two hours long and consists of a safety training session followed by hands-on instruction at the range. The fee is $20 per person and reservations are required. Archery equipment is provided by the County of Union.
  • Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella congratulates the Clark Pop Warner Midget Large Novice Cheerleading Squad for earning a spot in the National Pop Warner Cheer Championships at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The squad won the fourth place trophy at the competition.

The Mastodon bones on display were discovered in Lenape Park in the 1936 and are upwards of 25,000 years old.  The Union County Trailside Nature & Science Center is located at 452 New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ 07092 and is open from 12 noon to 5 p.m., 7 days a week. Admission is free.   • Union County Freeholders Angel G. Estrada and Bette Jane Kowalski (R) unveil a computer kiosk that tracks the progress of the newly installed solar panel arrays at Union County College in Cranford as College President Margaret McMenamin cuts a green ribbon officially marking the occasion. Union County College is now equipped with a complete set of solar panel arrays on the roof of each building on the Cranford Campus. These arrays will allow for clean, green energy production that will lessen the college’s ecological footprint. The solar panel project is part of the Union County Improvement Authority’s Renewable Energy Program.

  • Union County Freeholders Daniel Sullivan (6th R), Mohamed Jalloh (5th R) and Christopher Hudak (2nd R) joined Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage (2nd L), Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno (5th L), Senator Raymond Lesniak (7th R), Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (3rd R) and officials from Wakefern Food Corp. and Elberon Development Co. LLC in breaking ground on Elberon’s new warehouse and distribution center for Wakefern Food Corp on Wednesday at 600 York Street, Elizabeth. The new 524,000 square-foot, temperature-controlled facility will replace the former Wakefern grocery warehouse built in the 1950s, and increases storage capabilities by more than fifty-eight percent. The County of Union assisted in passing through $44 million in Federal Stimulus bond financing to spark the project, which not only maintained Wakefern in Elizabeth but also helped the company to expand.
  • Landscaping classes, for adults ages 18 and older, will be presented at the Trailside Nature & Science Center, sponsored by the Trailside Museum Association. The two classes, “Native Plants” on Saturday, May 12, and “Pruning Ornamental Plants” on Saturday, June 16.
  • Union County’s Trailside Nature and Science Center is offering Dusk to Dark family programs that explore the unique beauty of the Watchung Reservation in the early evening, starting with the Dusk Hike on May 16. Fun with Frogs and the Nature Trail Ride on horseback are among the other offerings.
