Union County to Offer Free Self-Defense Course for Women

UNION COUNTY, NJ — The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in conjunction with the Union County Office on Women and the Union County Sheriff’s Office will provide a free self-defense training session on Wednesday, June 26. The event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Room 200 at the Cranford Recreation Center, 220 Walnut Avenue, in Cranford.

This free session aims to focus on everyday safety tips, tricks and basic “street safety” self-defense techniques for teens and women, ages 14 and older.

“June is National Safety Month and the safety and well-being of our residents is our first priority,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “As the topics of sexual harassment and assault against women continue to dominate headlines across the country, the Freeholder Board is proud to provide this self-defense instruction to the women of Union County.

The hands-on training session will be led by the Union County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Union County Office on Women.  A Sheriff’s Officer will teach teens and women of age 14 and up. The session will cover everyday safety guidelines like where to hold keys, the safest way to walk on campus at night or in town, best practices for online and social media, and more.

Attendees should dress comfortably in workout attire.
