NOTICE
OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION
UPDATE RECEIVED: Thursday,
May 24, 2012
From
the New Jersey Department of Transportation
Municipality/County: Hillside Township/Union
County; Irvington Township & City
of Newark/Essex County
Nature
of work: Complete Stage 2 implementation
which has already started. Progress to Stage 2 throughout the East-end of the
project resulting in full Stage 2 implementation.
Route I-78 EB express will begin Stage 2 construction
of the right lane and shoulder East of MP 55.70.
Stage 2 construction of the right lane and shoulder
will continue West of MP 55.70.
Route I-78 WB express will begin Stage 2 construction
of the right lane and shoulder East of MP 55.80.
Stage 2 construction of the right lane and shoulder
will continue West of MP 55.80.
Anticipated
Traffic Impacts: Route I-78 EB express - Traffic
will travel in the Left Lane from MP 53.4 to 57.14
per Stage 2 TCP.
Route
I-78 WB express - Traffic will travel in the Left
Lane from MP 53.4 to 57.14 per Stage 2 TCP.
Local Lanes East and West bound will continue to
have 4 lanes in each direction.
Description
of New Traffic Pattern: From Stage 1 to Stage 2
the work zone is changing from center
median to express right lane and express outside
shoulder. The same overall number of travel lanes
exist in Stage 2 as Stage 1, however, the express
lanes in both directions will have barrier on both
sides of the single lanes (Cattle Shoot). The open
express lane width is reduced from 12’ to 11’.
Even with Emergency Pull Outs provided and peak hour
Emergency Towing Service on-site, the tightened express
lanes will slow express lane travel times. Barrier
which will be placed on the left side of the local
lanes, while not significantly reducing travel lane
width, will slow traffic.
RAMPS
IMPACTED: Access from I-78 EB express to Ramp
WN (W Peddie St) will be closed 5/18/12 and access
from I-78 EB local will be maintained at all times.
Access from Ramp 3 to WB express at M.P. 57.82 will
remain closed. Access from I-78 EB local to I-78
EB express using Slip Ramp EBL-EBE will remain closed.
Access to I-78 EB express from Ramp NE (Peddie St)
will remain closed;
Proposed
Date of Stage 2 Full Implementation: Tuesday
