Franklin School

Franklin School invited us for a tour of their garden!

One of the most interesting plants in this garden, which is not common, is none other than lamb’s ear.

Lamb’s ear is a native plant to Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. The soft, fuzzy leaves were an excellent addition to the children’s sensory garden.

Richmond Towers

Richmond Tower residents have once again surprised us with their amazing garden!

Plainfield Towers grows a variety of plants and vegetables, including but not limited to corn, tomatoes, squash and a very distinct crop; CALLALOO!

Callaloo is a plant used in popular dishes in many Caribbean countries and it was grown thanks to Jamaican gardener Bruce.

Thank you to everyone involved in maintaining this gorgeous garden.

Jewish Family Services

Looking for fresh apples? Look no further than Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth!

Interestingly enough, did you ever wonder why apples don’t sink in water?

Apples float in water because 25% of their volume is actually air which makes them less dense than water.

Thank you to everyone involved in helping this garden grow so beautifully.

Roselle Park Community Garden

Roselle Park Community Garden members have invited us for a tour of their garden!

Did you know that Roselle Park has one of the biggest gardens in Union County?

This is only possible with the help of all its members, who rent out beds to grow a variety of different crops.

We can’t wait to continue to see its growth!

Prevention Links/ Elizabethport Community Center

Union County Commissioner Sergio Granados toured and participated in prepping and planting at the Eport Community Center in Elizabeth.

The Eport Community Center has also added raised garden beds for a more inclusive garden!

Thank you to everyone who maintains and cares for this beautiful garden.

Deanna G Taylor Academy

Not only did staff of Deanna G Taylor Academy show us around their garden, they also showed us their brand-new compost bin!

There are plenty of tips that one can give to have a successful compost bin but one of the best ones is to place it in a well-drained spot which will ensure that any excess water will be able to drain away easily. This can also help worms get into the bin and we all know how good those are for gardens!

Roselle Park Middle School

Not only does Roselle Park Middle School have a beautiful garden, they also have incorporated a sensory garden!

A sensory garden is all about stimulating and engaging the five senses: sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. One way in which this garden does this is by growing lavender.

Lavender has been around for over 2,500 years and is a common ingredient in topical applications and oils for aromatherapy.

Roselle Park Middle School

Union County Vice Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded joined Roselle Park Mayor Joseph Signorello III, Councilman Jay Robaina, and Superintendent Pedro Garrido at Roselle Park Middle School for a Kids Dig in Planting – another great example of our Plant a Seed Grant Program bearing fruit (pun 100% intended) in the Union County community.

Fanwood – Scotch Plains YMCA

We’re growing!

Check out what’s growing at our YMCA!!

School No. 4

Union County Commissioner Sergio Granados and Commissioner Joe Bodek toured and helped harvest garlic at the Linden School No. 4 Garden. The garlic in particular is a student favorite—and these plants that the students harvested were later donated to local senior residents of the Ann J. Ferguson Towers.

Thank you for the invite!
