The Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Cranford Police Department are investigating the death of a woman that occurred on Sunday, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
Police were called to a residence on Greaves Place in Cranford shortly after noon on March 13, where they discovered the victim, Pamela Schmidt, 22, of Warren, N.J. unresponsive in a basement room, said Romankow. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy by the county medical examiner determined that Schmidt suffered traumatic injuries and that her death was ruled a homicide, said Romankow.
Investigators have determined a person of interest in connection with the homicide, but no charges have been filed as of Monday morning. This remains an active investigation but residents of Cranford should not feel like they are in danger. This appears to be a tragic isolated incident, said Romankow.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
