The Union County Homicide Task Force arrested and charged a Newark man with Felony Murder for his role in a shooting death that occurred inside an Elizabeth motel room just hours earlier, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
Juary Brito, 22, of Newark is also charged with murder, robbery and weapon offenses in the shooting death of Julio Duarte, 48 of Belleville. According to the investigation, Duarte was in a room at the Spring Lane Motel (930 Spring St, Elizabeth) with several other people around 1:30 a.m. when Brito entered and began an armed robbery.
During the course of the robbery Duarte was shot several times and upon the police’s arrival was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:30a.m., said Romankow.
Members of the Task Force were quickly able to identify Brito as the suspect in the case and located him on Ferry Street in Newark around 6 p.m. He is currently being held on $700,000 bail at the Union County Jail and will have a court appearance in the coming days.
These criminal charges are mere accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
