The Union County Homicide Task Force and Roselle Police Department is investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old male that occurred earlier this morning in Roselle, announced Union County First Assistant Prosecutor Albert Cernadas, Jr.
The victim has been identified as Damel Mitchell of Roselle. Police were called to the Sylvester Land Field before 11 a.m. on reports of a person shot. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:12 a.m., said Cernadas.
Detectives will continue to work throughout the day to examine evidence and interview potential witnesses, said Cernadas. No arrests had been made by this afternoon and investigators are working to establish a motive for the shooting. Additionally, anyone with information is urged to contact the Union County Crimestoppers at (908) 654-TIPS or www.uctip.org. Tipsters that anonymously provide information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000.
“This is a startling incident and one that has no place in the city of Roselle or anywhere,” said Mayor Jamel Holley. “Anyone who commits a crime in our city will be sought after and punished to the full extent of the law. I ask my fellow residents to be vigilant, report suspicious behavior, and to stand with police against any criminal that seeks to disrupt our peaceful way of life.”
This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released via email from the Prosecutor’s Office as it becomes available.
