A Hillside man was charged yesterday with murder and other offenses, following a shooting in Elizabeth last weekend, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.
At approximately 11:32pm on Friday the HTF was notified by the Elizabeth Police Department of a shooting in the area of 659 Carteret Street, Elizabeth NJ. The victims were Orlando Hernandez, 39-years-old, and a 26-year old man. Both are from Elizabeth, said Romankow. Orlando Hernandez was transported to University hospital in grave condition, and succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon. The other victim taken to a local hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Elizabeth Patrol officers Jose Montilla and Ronnie Cruz were in the area of the 600 block of Carteret Street on Friday when they heard gun shots. The officers immediately responded and gave chase to an individual they believed to be involved in the incident, said Romankow. The officers called for backup and Detectives Raul Delaprida and Jose Martinez responded to the call and apprehended the suspect, Jonathon James (DOB: 5-14-93). He is charged with, murder, attempted murder, and weapon possession. He is being held on $1 million bail.
These criminal charges are mere accusations.
The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
