Standoff ends peacefully in Union Township

A brief standoff between an armed man and police ended peacefully when the man surrendered to authorities in Union Township Tuesday morning, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park and Union Township Police Director Daniel Zieser announced.

It was shortly before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when police received a report of an apparently distraught man with a firearm inside a home on the 2300 block of Pleasant Parkway in Union, Park and Zieser said. Arriving Union Township police units set up a perimeter around the home, closing off a portion of the street, while members of the Union County Emergency Response Team (UCERT) also rushed to the scene.

Soon thereafter, police negotiators managed to get the man to discard the firearm and exit the home without further incident. Officers took the 22-year-old into custody and transported him to a local hospital.

It was later determined that the man fired two shots inside the home, but no one was struck by gunfire. No one was injured during the incident, which remains under investigation. As of early Tuesday afternoon no charges had been filed in connection with this matter.
