Man arrested following fatal wreck

A local man is in custody after being involved in a fatal accident in Elizabeth earlier this week, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Wednesday.

Sergio Gomez Ochoa, 36, is charged with driving while intoxicated and multiple traffic offenses in connection with the wreck that killed 63-year-old Everett Ewan of Elizabeth.

An investigation involving the Union County Homicide Task Force, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Elizabeth Police Department is continuing.

To date the investigation has determined that Ochoa allegedly left a bar on Dowd Avenue in Elizabeth after midnight on Tuesday and drove the wrong way onto a nearby highway ramp, where he struck an oncoming vehicle being driven by Ewan.

Ewan was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ochoa was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of injuries.

Anyone with information about this matter is being urged to contact Task Force Detective Brendan Sullivan at 908-966-0999 or Elizabeth Police Detective Rich Hernandez at 908-603-9639.

These charges are mere accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
