A fatal stabbing that took place outside an auto mechanic shop in Elizabeth early this morning is under joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and, Elizabeth Police Department, and Union County Sheriff’s Office, its investigative partner agencies, acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo announced Saturday.

The victim has been identified as Carlos Ariza, 67, of Elizabeth.  

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Saturday, Elizabeth Police Department patrol units responded to the 500 block of Elizabeth Avenue on a report of an argument that was growing heated, according to the preliminary investigation. Arriving officers found Ariza at the scene, having sustained a stab wound.

Ariza was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.

A joint investigation involving the Homicide Task Force, Elizabeth Police Department, and Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit remains ongoing, and anyone with information about this matter is being urged to contact Task Force Sgt.
