Undersheriff Burke commands the Field Services and Administrative Divisions, which includes the Administrative, Legal Process, and Professional Standards Units within Administrative Division; and the Criminal Investigations, Family Violence, Community Policing, Crime Scene, K9 Search and Rescue Units and the Bureau of Criminal Identification within Field Services Division.  He additionally serves as the Commander of the Union County Emergency Response and SWAT teams.  UCERT/SWAT is a county wide task force, with participation from each of the twenty five agencies in Union County; the team is charged with the tactical resolution of all critical incidents and civil disorder events within Union County.

The Undersheriff joined the Union County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 and was assigned to the Investigations Unit and Warrant Squad upon his graduation from the Police Academy. He served a majority of his career as a Task Force Officer to other County and Federal Agencies.  He was assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Counter Terrorism Task Force, FBI-Newark Field Office Joint Terrorism Task Force, and Union County Homeland Security Bureau.  He served for over ten years as the Northern NJ Urban Area Security Initiative Law Enforcement liaison for Union County.  He returned to service with the Sheriff’s Office in 2014, and was promoted to Captain in 2015, commanding the Field Services Division prior to his appointment to Undersheriff in February 2018 by Sheriff Corvelli.

Undersheriff Burke holds a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and certificates from FBI-LEEDA Command and Executive Programs.  He the recipient of the John H. Stamler Police Academy Class 74 Academic Achievement Award, as well as 4 Commendation Awards, 6 Letters of Commendation, 3 Distinguished Service Certificates, and 1 Unit Commendation.  He has also received several commendations and awards for his participation with UCERT and service as a Task Force Officer.  He is a certified firearms and SWAT Tactics instructor, and instructs at the John H Stamler Police Academy for both recruit and in-service courses.
