The Surrogate’s Court offers home and evening appointments.
Fill out the information sheet and the trust sheet if necessary. If you have a Will I do not need to know the assets.
What we need to prepare the papers: In order for the client to have an evening or home appointment or just have the work ready when they come to the office, we need a copy of the Will, death certificate and information sheet. These are located on the web site at ucnj.org/surrogate there is a tab on the left hand side to download the information sheet with instruction on how to fill it out. You need to provide all the pertinent information, how many surrogate certificates you will need and the names and addresses of all the next of kin. (Heirs-at-Law)
Once we get the information (include a daytime phone number) we will assign it to a probate clerk who will prepare the papers for the Surrogate to take your signature. Once the clerk has prepared your paperwork she will call to confirm your appointment and inform you how much the probate fees will be. When you come to the office, or satellite location, you will bring the Original Will, Certified Death Certificate with raised seal and a check for the fees.
Home appointments are for the elderly and infirmed only.
Administrations – The asset page is mandatory for an administration.
We need a certified death certificate indicating that the decedent resided in Union County and the names and addresses of the next of kin. The individual with the closest relationship is the one who should apply. Whoever is applying should have the resources to acquire a Surety Bond if necessary. There is additional information on web site at ucnj.org/surrogate if you wish to take a look. You need to provide all the pertinent information, how many surrogate certificates you will need and the names and addresses of all the next of kin.
If this is an Administration (no Will), then you must know every asset in the name of the decedent. You will get one certificate for every asset.
