The following is a list of terms and definitions:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-tw-border-inner\">\n<li><strong>Administrator\/Administratrix<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person appointed by the courts to take charge of the estate of a decedent who dies without a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beneficiary<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person designated to receive money, property or benefits in a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bequest<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A gift of personal property by a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bequeath<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 To dispose of personal property through a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Codicil<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 An addition or supplement to an original will that adds to or deletes only part of a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decedent<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A deceased person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Devise<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A gift of real estate through a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Escheat<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Property reverting to the state for want of any legal heir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Estate<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Property and possessions owned by an individual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Executor\/Executrix<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person named in a will to carry out the wishes and intentions of the will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guardian<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person entrusted by the law with the personal and\/or fiduciary care of another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heir<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person who inherits property from a deceased person through a blood relationship, including legal adoptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intestate<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 When a person dies without a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Legatee<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person who receives a gift under a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal property<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Intangible property, such as stock, bonds or bank accounts and tangible property such as jewelry, furniture or an automobile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Probate<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Official proof of the authenticity or validity of a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Real Property<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Land or building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Surrogate<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Elected county official who oversees probate in the State of New Jersey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Testator\/testatrix<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person who makes a will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Property owned or managed by a person for another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trustee<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person holding property in trust for another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Will<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A legal declaration of the manner in which a person wishes his or her estate to be distributed after death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Witness<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Person who observes the signing of a document and attests to the signatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may encounter hard-to-understand legal terms as you go through the probate process.
