First, the court must determine whether a person is&nbsp;incapacitated. Until the court decides, the person is an&nbsp;alleged incapacitated person (AIP). After the court determines incapacitation, they become a protected person or ward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Examples of&nbsp;incapacitation&nbsp;include:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mental illness or deficiency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical illness or disability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic drug use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic alcoholism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developmental disability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There are three types of guardianship:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Guardianship of the person and estate.<\/strong>&nbsp;The guardian is responsible for the individual\u2019s healthcare and financial management.
