Union County Commissioner Michèle Delisfort and Union County Commissioner Sergio Granados visited the Union County Community Garden in Elizabeth.
The garden has amazing fresh produce which includes eggplant!
Did you know that eggplants are related to potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers? They are! More interestingly, New Jersey produces the most eggplants in the U.S.

Here at School 21 we have been working on our new composter bin! Many families in the area add to the bin to help our progress. Our garden has grown so much and been able to donate over 30lbs of food to our food bank.

Students at Joseph Battin #4 Main checked on the garden before the end of the School Year to make sure it was growing well, to water it and to do some weeding. Then, during Summer School, our custodians helped with the irrigation and students were able to see the vegetables growing. Students got to taste some tomatoes and cucumbers.

Looking for fresh apples? Look no further than Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth!
Interestingly enough, did you ever wonder why apples don’t sink in water?
Apples float in water because 25% of their volume is actually air which makes them less dense than water.
Thank you to everyone involved in helping this garden grow so beautifully.

Union County Commissioner Sergio Granados toured and participated in prepping and planting at the Eport Community Center in Elizabeth.
The Eport Community Center has also added raised garden beds for a more inclusive garden!
Thank you to everyone who maintains and cares for this beautiful garden.

Once again, Juan Pablo Duarte School No. 28 have amazed us with their garden.
Not only do they have a variety of vegetables, fruits, and flowers growing, they have also incorporated a story walk.
What is a story walk?
A story walk is a trail with pages from a children’s book displayed for people to read as they walk.
School No.28 has incorporated this idea by placing a story walk along their growing garden!
Thank you to all the staff and students who are involved in maintaining this amazing garden.

Winfield School No.2 is growing their very own cucumbers!
Not only can a single vine produce 25-125 cucumbers, cucumbers were thought to be poisonous when they first originated!
Thank you to all the staff and students who are involved in maintaining this beautiful garden.
