Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or long-term disability, is a federally run benefits program that provides aid to people who are unable to achieve gainful employment due to a permanent disabling condition.
SSDI is financed by the Social Security tax. Therefore, any person that qualifies as disabled according to the definition provided by the Social Security Administration, and who has paid Social Security taxes long enough to achieve sufficient work credits, can qualify for SSDI.
Disability Determination Services handles claims for long-term disability filed with the Social Security Administration. If you are not filing for Social Security Disability you may be eligible for Temporary Disability benefits.
The law defines disability as the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (work) by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s), which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes):
It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and
It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.
