Resource Guide for New Americans

Below are resources & services complied by the Union County Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC) to address the needs of immigrants arriving in New Jersey, as well as, assisting local partners in the human services network.  This document is intended to assist newcomers who may NOT be able to furnish proof of status as a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident or “qualified alien,” but who are making their home in Union County.

Food Pantry and/or Soup Kitchen

  • Catholic Charities of Newark – Legal Orientation Programs
    • Family Group Legal Orientation Program (FGLOP) serves recently-arrived families who are on the court’s Dedicated Docket. Families may be on this special docket if they are apprehended between ports of entry on or after May 28, 2021, quickly placed in removal proceedings, & enrolled in Alternatives to Detention.

    • Immigration Court Helpdesk (ICH) serves non-detained individuals in removal proceedings, i.e. any individual who is not on the Dedicated Docket.

    • Legal Orientation Program for Custodians (LOPC) focuses on unaccompanied minors in removal proceedings. LOPC informs custodians of their responsibilities in ensuring that the child’s appearance at all immigration proceedings & that the child’s mental health, physical health, & educational needs are met, as well as in protecting the child from mistreatment, exploitation, & trafficking.

Uniting for Stronger Communities: The Role of the Human Services Advisory Council in Union County

The Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC) is a collaborative body that plays a vital role in addressing the needs of the community and advising the county government on matters related to human services. The council is composed of representatives from various sectors, including non-profit organizations, government agencies, community leaders, and individuals with expertise in human services.

HSAC serves as a platform for communication, coordination, and collaboration among its members and stakeholders. Its main objectives are to assess the needs and priorities of the community, identify gaps in services, and make recommendations to improve the delivery of human services in Union County.

The council actively engages in strategic planning, policy development, and advocacy to enhance the well-being and quality of life for residents of Union County. It provides a forum for sharing information, best practices, and innovative ideas among its members, fostering a collective approach to addressing the diverse needs of the community.

Additionally, HSAC collaborates with other county boards, committees, and community partners to ensure a comprehensive and integrated system of care. By fostering partnerships and promoting effective service delivery, the council aims to enhance access, equity, and effectiveness of human services in Union County.
