Extremely Cold Temperatures

Avoid spending extended periods outdoors. If you must go out dress in layers and keep exposed areas covered. Check with elderly family members or neighbors to make sure they have heat and are prepared for cold temperatures so they don’t have to venture outdoors.

The following tips are offered by the Red Cross to help you stay safe:

Layer up! Wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm. Gloves and a hat will help prevent losing your body heat.

Don’t forget your furry friends. Bring pets indoors. If they can’t come inside, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water.

Remember the three feet rule. If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away – things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.

Requires supervision – Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed.

Don’t catch fire! If you are using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs.

Protect your pipes. Run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent your pipes from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Keep the garage doors closed if there are water lines in the garage.

Better safe than sorry. Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night. Your heating bill may be a little higher, but you could avoid a more costly repair job if your pipes freeze and burst.

The kitchen is for cooking. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.

Use generators outside. Never operate a generator inside the home, including in the basement or garage.

Knowledge is power. Don’t hook a generator up to the home’s wiring. The safest thing to do is to connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator.

Route 22 westbound to be closed tonight in Union Township

NJ DOT

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 22 westbound will be closed and detoured tonight for emergency bridge deck repairs in Union.

Starting tonight at 9 p.m. Friday, January 8 until 7 a.m. Saturday, January 9, NJDOT’s contractor Power Concrete, Co. Inc., is scheduled to close Route 22 westbound in the vicinity of Burke Parkway to perform emergency bridge deck repairs. Route 22 eastbound will not be affected.

The following detours will be in place:

Passenger Vehicles Detour from Route 22 westbound

  • Motorists traveling westbound on Route 22 in Union will be directed onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 eastbound ramp.
  • At the bottom of the ramp, motorists will make a left onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound.
  • From Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound motorists will be directed to make a left onto Caldwell Avenue.
  • From Caldwell Avenue, motorists will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

Passenger Vehicles Detour from the Garden State Parkway South

  • Motorists from the Garden State Parkway South going to Route 22 westbound in Union will be directed to the Morris Avenue/Route 82 eastbound ramp and make a left onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound.
  • From Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound motorists will be directed to make a left onto Caldwell Avenue.
  • From Caldwell Avenue, motorists will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

Truck and Bus Detour from Route 22 westbound

  • Trucks traveling westbound on Route 22 in Union will be directed onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound ramp.
  • From Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound trucks will be directed to make a left onto Meisel Avenue/Route 124.
  • Trucks will continue on Meisel Avenue/Route 124 and stay right as the road splits. Meisel Avenue will turn into South Springfield Avenue/CR577.
  • From South Springfield Avenue/CR577, trucks will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

NJDOT recommends that motorists plan their trips accordingly and prepare for delays in the region.

This emergency work is part of a $2 million bridge deck replacement project expected to be completed in the spring of 2016. This section of the bridge work was scheduled to be reconstructed in the next phase of the project but deterioration of the roadway necessitated emergency repairs now. The project is being constructed in stages, beginning with the new deck and parapets. Each stage is re-constructing approximately one third of the bridge deck at a time. The bridge deck replacement project includes milling and paving the bridge approaches, and reconstructing the guide rail, sidewalk, and curb. As the project progresses, NJDOT will provide information before any closures or detours are implemented.

NJDOT will be using Variable Message Signs to provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
