The Fugitive Investigations Unit, also known as the “Warrant Squad”, is responsible for locating and apprehending known wanted criminals throughout Union County and the State of New Jersey. The unit is led by Captain Thomas Lapolla and consists of a lieutenant, sergeant, and a small specialized group of plainclothes officers who track down fugitives on the run for crimes ranging from drug possession to murder.
Warrant Squad officers blend the latest in computer technology with long-established methods of policing in their investigations, which can last from days to years. Methods employed by these officers are as complicated as tying together information from various state and national databases, and as simple as talking to citizens within the community.
Members of the unit also serve with the United States Marshal’s New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, and local municipalities to apprehend the most violent of fugitives across jurisdictional and state lines and safely return them to face their charges in Union County. In addition to fugitive investigations Warrant Squad officers are also empowered to conduct criminal investigations as well as make arrests for offenses of New Jersey Criminal Laws.
